"Barracuda" was played at the 2008 Republican National Convention after speeches by the party's presidential nominee John McCain and his vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin (most likely a reference to Palin's nickname "Barracuda"). The song was played without Heart's consent. On September 5, 2008, the Wilson sisters made a statement to the press: "Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it here." They later announced that the Republican campaign had been sent a cease-and-desist order from Sony BMG and Universal Music.[7]
However, Roger Fisher, the band's former guitarist who co-wrote the song, was "thrilled" by the songs use and the song is also licensed for use in public performances under a blanket fee paid to ASCAP by the convention's venue.[8]
